9 non-Prada fashion movies — ranked!

Fashion movie lists always rank the movie The Devil Wears Prada at least in the top 3. It's a justified and good choice, but also an obvious one. So for this ranking, I excluded one devilish movie and let another one steal the crown!

When you google "fashion movies" you always get the same results which turns yet another list redundant. To make this top 9 fashion movie list unique and actually worth a read, it only covers movies I've actually watched and enjoyed. This means that unfortunately Zoolander is mentioned nowhere except on my watch list. What I didn't list are biopics. Yes, Coco and House of Gucci are cool movies, but rather serious and show real geniuses and works. Such personalities and their movies honestly can't be compared sometimes. So here's my list of 9 entertaining, non-Prada, non-biographical fashion movies!

9. The intern

Are you in for a well-cast, wholesome fashion movie? Then you gotta check out The Intern. I recently rewatched it with my mother and it was lots of fun. She admires Anne Hathaway, is a Robert De Niro fan and loves cute looks. Besides scratching my mom's itch, this movie taught me that real start-up bosses wear leopard Louboutins to bike through the office. I'm 24. I know I look older. It's the job. It ages you, which won't be great in your case... Sorry.

8. Sex and the city

Watching rich people play dress up several times a day is amusing and bewildering in its own kind of way. But whenever I think about Carrie's job, I just wonder how a writer in 2008 could afford such a lavish lifestyle. Is she even rich? Great apartment in the middle of New York City, dining with friends in exclusive restaurants, shopping sprees in the most trendy stores like Dolce & Gabbana... Sounds more like credit card debt. Year after year, twenty-something women come to New York City in search of the two L's: labels and love. Came for the 2000s fashion, stayed for the cheesiness.

7. 13 going on 30

Coincidentally, I watched this movie right when slip dresses just like the one Jennifer Garner wears were in again. Why not wear your lingerie to work? Can you tell I'm wearing underwear? 'Cause I totally am. Whatever. Just call it fashion. 13 going on 30 is a delightful movie that occasionally feels weirdly inappropriate when you remind yourself that Jenna is a teenager in an adult's body.

6. Cruella

My best friend is a fashion designer and from his anecdotes, I learned how crazy the fashion industry may drive you. Wreaking havoc at galas is my personal specialty. Cruella is living my fashion dreams with her black-white-and-red color scheme, although I'd pass on the hair. Well, and there are dogs in the movies, so that's a plus, too.

5. Glass Onion

For me, this movie's fashion was all about texture. Just look at Daniel Craig's shirts. Whenever they appear on screen, I want to touch them. The same goes for Kate Hudson's rainbow gown. It was a tribute to Beyoncé, but people didn’t see it like that. Besides looking stunning, the outfits in Glass Onion flawlessly reflect the characters' backgrounds and personalities. My inner movie scholar is happy.

4. Ocean's 8

Yes, Ocean's 8 is about the MET Gala which means that it easily ranks high on any fashion movie list. Sometimes, it felt a bit too polished and forcefully focused on serving looks instead of story, but Cate Blanchett makes watching this spin-off worth it. Is it her talent, her character Lou's coolness or her rock'n'roll outfits? How do you explain all this to your husband? I don't know and I don't care — it's a fun movie about a jewelry heist with a star-studded cast!

3. Clueless

Hear me out: some movies don't need to be fashion-forward to be famous for their looks. Alicia Silverstone aka Cher's plaid yellow suit is simply iconic. And her attitude as well. I don't want to be a traitor to my generation and all but I don't get how guys dress today. I mean, come on, it looks like they just fell out of bed and put on some baggy pants and take their greasy hair - ew - and cover it up with a backwards cap and like, we're expected to swoon? I don't think so. This movie has too many funny quotes to include in this article. What surprised me when rewatching this 90s movie was, that it's not toxic although it's all about teenage love, difficult friendships and high school life. Yeah, I'm looking at you, American Pie!

2. Crazy Rich Asians

As an Asian, I'm biased towards this comedy. It makes lots of cultural references and jokes that might be hidden from people who aren't familiar with Asia. For example, when Rachel aka Constance Wu gets told to wear the red Miu Miu dress for good luck, I just couldn't keep it together. Fashion-wise, my personal highlight were Awkwafina's looks: mixing all those patterns and luscious fabrics to create fun outfits that even look comfortable is not something you see every day. But don't we all deserve comfy yet fashionable clothes? Oh, and how amazing were those locations? I can't believe this airport has a butterfly garden and a movie theatre. JFK is just salmonella and despair. Singapore is now most definitively on my travel bucket list.

1. Bedazzled

Fight me about this #1 movie! Its antagonist is the devil, but she doesn't wear Prada. Bedazzled is more camp than actual fashion and I'm here for it. Elizabeth Hurley changes her outfits every 5 minutes and they're always over the top — the red leather suit, the tiny 90s sunglasses, her BAD shirt that's literally bedazzled with rhinestones... It's all too literal both for portraying the devil and being shot in 2000. It's not easy being the Barbra Streisand of Evil. I'm loving it. And don't forget about Brendan Fraser does it all and steals every scene. Great movie, 10/10!

Do you agree with my top 9 non-Prada movie ranking? I would've liked to add a bunch of other movies, but all in all, they honestly only had 1 or 2 particular outfits that stood out instead of being an actual fashionable movie... Sounds like a great idea for the next article, doesn't it? Let me know what you think by sending me a DM!
